Yes. Per CRC R702.3.5 and ASTM C1396, long ceiling spans with textured finish require 5/8" sag-resistant board and tighter fastener spacing. We follow GA-216 on tall installs — longer screws, tighter pattern, butt joints back-blocked. Standard 1/2" board sags in this spec.

Do I need a permit to repair water-damaged drywall in our Valley Center home?

Valley Center is unincorporated; the County of San Diego DPW+P (Department of Public Works + Planning) is the permit authority. For in-kind drywall replacement after a water event, a streamlined permit is usually available; for scope changes or wall reconfiguration, a standard building permit. We file with the County directly.

We are doing an owner-builder ADU on our Valley Center acreage. When in the build do we call you for the drywall?
