Is All 5/8″ Drywall Type X?
Short answer: no — and knowing the difference matters if a plan set, an inspector, or an HOA is asking for a fire-rated wall or ceiling.

No. Thickness and fire rating are two different things. A sheet of drywall can be 5/8″ thick and still not be Type X.

When an ADU shares a wall or ceiling with the main house, that assembly often needs to be fire-rated — “5/8-inch board” isn’t the same claim as “tested assembly.”

What “5/8-inch” Actually Tells You
5/8″ is a measurement of thickness. It tells you nothing about what’s inside the board. Standard 5/8″ drywall (sometimes called “regular” or “firecode-lite” depending on the supplier) is just a thicker version of the same gypsum core as 1/2″ board — better at resisting sag on a ceiling, a little better at sound, but not engineered for fire resistance on its own.
Type X is a different core formulation. It’s reinforced with glass fibers that hold the gypsum together longer under direct flame, which is what actually slows fire spread through the assembly. Type X almost always ships at 5/8″ because that thickness is part of the tested assembly — but the reverse isn’t true. Not every 5/8″ sheet is Type X.
How to Actually Tell the Difference
The only reliable way to confirm a board is Type X is the marking on the long edge of the sheet — a UL (or similar testing agency) stamp with the product designation printed every few feet. If you’re standing in front of an open wall or a stack of board on a job site, that edge stamp is what settles it, not the thickness number on the invoice.
If the wall is already closed in and you can’t see the edge, the fallback is the paperwork: the plan set, the fire-rated assembly detail it’s built to (commonly a UL-listed wall or ceiling assembly), or the supplier’s delivery ticket if it’s still on file.
The Assembly Is the Whole System
A fire-rated assembly is the whole system, not just the board. Fastener spacing, joint treatment, and how the board ties into framing are all part of what got tested and listed. Swapping in a heavier sheet of drywall without matching the rest of the assembly doesn’t automatically get you a rated wall back.
Common Questions
Does “firecode” on the label mean it’s Type X?
Not always — some suppliers use “firecode” loosely for their heavier 5/8″ lite product, which isn’t the same as a true Type X core. Check for the actual UL type designation, not just the word “firecode” on a label.
Can I just use Type X everywhere to be safe?
You can, and it won’t hurt anything structurally, but it costs more and it’s heavier to hang. For anything that isn’t a required fire-rated assembly, standard board does the job. Match the board to what the wall actually needs.
