Drywall Finishing & Texture Work

Drywall finishing is where a project either comes together or shows every mistake underneath it.

A lot of the calls we get come from projects that are already partway done. Sometimes the drywall was hung to save money. Other times, a hanging crew was used and the finishing was left open. In some cases the work stalled. In others, it just didn’t turn out the way it should have. Either way, someone needs to step in and finish it properly.

That’s where we come in.

At SGP Drywall, we focus on closing out drywall projects the right way. Before finishing starts, we look closely at the details that affect the final result — fasteners that aren’t set correctly, gaps that need attention, uneven joints, and corners that need to be cleaned up. Those things matter. When they’re rushed or ignored, it always shows later.

What Is Drywall Finishing?

Drywall finishing is the stage where drywall either blends in or starts drawing attention to itself.

It’s the process of treating joints, seams, fasteners, corners, and transitions so walls and ceilings look uniform and ready for paint or texture. Finishing always happens after drywall installation but it’s often the part that gets underestimated — especially on projects where the drywall was hung by a production crew or done as a DIY effort.

We see this all the time. Drywall gets hung, but screws aren’t set consistently, gaps get skipped, corners aren’t cleaned up, or joints aren’t prepped correctly. Those details don’t disappear with paint. They show more.

Drywall finishing has defined levels, ranging from Level 0 (no finish at all) to Level 5 (a full skim coat). Each level serves a purpose depending on the space, lighting, and final look you’re after. Here’s a straightforward breakdown:

In short, drywall finishing ensures that the surface looks seamless—free of visible lines, screw holes, or rough textures—whether it’s getting painted, wallpapered, or textured.

People Also Ask

What grit sandpaper should I use for drywall finishing?

It depends on the stage of the work. For textured finishes, anything finer than 120 grit usually works well. Between coats of joint compound, 80–120 grit is common. If you’re going for a smoother finish or final pass, 150–220 grit helps refine the surface without tearing it up. The key is using the right grit at the right time — sanding too fine too early can actually make finishing harder.

Yes. We handle small drywall fixes like nail pops and fastener issues at competitive prices. The only ask is flexibility. If we’re already working in your area that week, we’ll reach out and take care of it efficiently.

Yes, microcement can be applied over drywall, but prep matters. We recommend either new drywall or an existing surface that’s been primed and smoothed out. Microcement is applied in thin layers, so any imperfections underneath will show through if the surface isn’t prepped correctly.

For plaster walls, we typically recommend using Westpac all-purpose joint compound because it contains acrylic adhesive properties that bond well. We always start with a very thin first coat. It dries faster, helps prevent pores, and creates a better base for additional coats.

If a general contractor is running the repipe project, drywall restoration is usually included. If plumbers are working directly with the homeowner, drywall repair often isn’t part of their scope. That’s where we come in. We regularly handle wall and ceiling restoration after repipes and close the project out cleanly.

The most effective way to speed up texture dry time is with dehumidifiers. Removing moisture from the air helps texture dry more evenly and consistently.

Heaters and fans can help in some situations, but they usually don’t make a major difference on their own. Too much heat can actually cause texture to dry unevenly, and fans mostly help with air movement rather than true drying. In most cases, lowering humidity matters more than raising temperature.

If drying time is critical, controlling moisture is the best place to start.
