This free drywall calculator estimates walls and ceiling together, or walls only — switch with the "Include ceiling?" setting above. Here is the exact math it runs, so you can check any number by hand:
Walls only: 2 × (12 + 10) × 8 = 352 sq ft, minus 57 sq ft of door and window openings = 295 sq ft → about 11 sheets of 4×8 at 15% waste.
Walls and ceiling: 295 + (12 × 10 ceiling) = 415 sq ft → about 15 sheets of 4×8 at 15% waste.
Rule of thumb: a room's total drywall area (walls plus ceiling) is usually 3.5–4× its floor area. A 120 sq ft bedroom needs roughly 420–480 sq ft of drywall — about 14–16 sheets of 4×8. The calculator above replaces the rule of thumb with your real dimensions and waste factor.
Include the ceiling for new construction, additions, garage conversions, and full-gut remodels. Leave it out when the ceiling is staying — most repairs and repaints. For a ceiling-only job (common after a roof or plumbing leak), the area is simply Length × Width; ceilings on joists spaced 24" should use 5/8" board or sag-resistant ceiling board. If the ceiling damage came from water, see our water damage drywall repair service before closing anything up.
Sheets are only part of the shopping list. Per 1,000 sq ft of hung drywall (about 32 sheets of 4×8), typical finishing quantities for a standard Level 4 finish are:
| Material | Quantity per 1,000 sq ft | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Joint compound | ~140 lb ready-mix (two 5-gal buckets) | Texture coats add material |
| Joint tape | ~370 linear ft | Paper or mesh |
| Drywall screws | ~700 screws | 1-5/8" coarse for 1/2" board on wood studs |
| Corner bead | 1 stick per outside corner | 8 ft or 10 ft sticks |
Scale linearly — a 500 sq ft job needs about half of each. Your sheet count above already includes the waste factor; buy mud and tape to the pre-waste square footage.
