History

Birch Aquarium’s origins trace back to the Marine Biological Association of San Diego in 1903, which laid the foundation for Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The modern aquarium opened in 1951 under T. Wayland Vaughan’s direction, delighting visitors with marine displays. In 1992, thanks to a donation from the Birch Foundation, the aquarium relocated to its oceanfront cliff-top site in La Jolla, overlooking the Pacific. Over half a million people visit annually, drawn by its educational programs and scenic setting. Most recently, on May 22, 2025, the new Adam R. Scripps Living Seas Gallery debuted—the museum’s largest renovation in decades—featuring immersive Pacific habitats, a giant Pacific octopus habitat, and dramatically expanded coral and mangrove exhibits.
