History of Gaslamp Quarter

Originally known as “New Town” in the 1860s, the area that is now the Gaslamp Quarter was developed by Alonzo Horton, who envisioned a new city center closer to the bay. The neighborhood flourished in the late 19th and early 20th centuries but experienced decline mid-20th century. Revitalization efforts in the 1980s and 1990s restored many historic buildings, leading to the area’s designation as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
