Founded in response to growing enthusiasm for public science in the late 1950s, the Fleet Science Center opened its doors in 1973 as the first institution to combine interactive exhibits, a planetarium, and an IMAX Dome theater. The initial vision came from the San Diego Hall of Science—later the San Diego Space and Science Foundation—and named in honor of aviation pioneer Reuben H. Fleet following a generous gift from his family.
