Overview of Cabrillo National Monument
Cabrillo National Monument, located at the southern tip of the Point Loma Peninsula in San Diego, California, commemorates the landing of Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542. This event marked the first European expedition to set foot on what is now the West Coast of the United States. History of Cabrillo National Monument
Established on October 14, 1913, by presidential proclamation, Cabrillo National Monument honors the historic landing of Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo at San Diego Bay. The site was designated as California Historical Landmark #56 in 1932 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966. The monument includes the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, which operated from 1855 to 1891 and now serves as a museum. The area also encompasses former military installations, such as coastal artillery batteries built to protect the harbor during World Wars I and II.
